Shinola Cola

A drink for the hipsters, Shinola Cola from Detroit. Detroit? Hey now, who are they trying to kid? I grew up near Detroit, and there is N-O-T-H-I-N-G hipster about the city of Detroit, LOL. Nonetheless, the cola was refreshing, especially splashed atop homemade ice cream on this humid November day in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District in Miami. One guy I know drank two. —Peace out!

MIAMI STREET PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Little Havana

I had the privilege of teaching a one-day street photography workshop for a photographer from Columbus, Ohio on Saturday in Miami, Fla. The weather and light was fantastic too. We covered a lot of ground including the Wynwood Art District, Little Havana, downtown and Bayfront Park. To get to all these places, I had to ride the Tri-Rail (train), the Metrrail (elevated subway), the Metromover (think Walt Disney's monorail), the Metrobus (city bus), and even used Uber twice (Uber is awesome). It was a fantastic day! Posted is the third series of images from the day. These photos were shot in Little Havana. I hope you enjoy.

MIAMI STREET PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Sunset Strip circa 1979

It's not really Sunset Strip, but Miami. But in some ways it reminds me of a still from a late 70's flick, which makes the photo work.

Shoot, Don't Think!

What's in a Photograph?

The above photograph is a prime example of not hesitating when seeing. As street photographers we must always be looking and ready. Moments are fleeting and only happen once--in an instant--and are gone forever.

What I attempt to convey to my workshop students is to react instantly to the situation right in front of them without first composing or thinking about what they're seeing. It's like a gut instinct; a feeling inside you. There's something there that you perceive and are drawn to, but it's not yet fully realized. So instead of thinking it through, you must instantly react and shoot it, and shoot until it's over not just one frame. Capture the picture now, then decide later during the edit if the photo works. Is it a photograph or not a photograph?

In this case, I saw the dark slender figure approaching and walking through an already appealing scene. I liked the light. Or was it the white wall that appealed to me. Or maybe it was the mysterious figure, his slender form or black clothing that I was drawn to. But at the moment I pressed the shutter, I didn't fully know. To me, the intangible in this photo is the triangular splash of light on the ground--a kind of Rembrandt lighting for the street. It seems to be pointing back to the subject, highlighting him, saying, "Look here!" All of these things come together and form what is, in my opinion, a photograph.

Labor Day Sale

City Furniture

Above is a screenshot of the latest City Furniture ad that I shot for their upcoming Labor Day sale. I shot this during a commercial video shoot this past May in Miami, along with several others including their 4th of July ad. I believe there are a few other coming including a Thanksgiving sale, so check back soon.

We will be doing another 4-day commercial shoot for City Furniture (a South Florida company) again in early October for next year's winter and spring sale ads. They are a super company and a lot of fun to shoot for.

Summer Sales

20150826-July 4th Sale_Poster-web.jpg

The shots above are from a recent shoot for a wonderful South Florida company, City Furniture. The shoot was back in May, and the images are being used for various sale posters and summer ads in print and online. We'll be back at it in early October for the fall ads though, so stay tuned.

Not only does City Furniture carry excellent products, they are a classy company that really cares about their customers and their employees. I've shot three separate jobs for them this year, and have been impressed with their people every single time.
